Escambia county is the Westernmost county in Florida. The county seat is Pensacola. The US Cencus Bureau estimated that the population in Escambia county was 302,939 in 2008. It has two incorporated cities, Pensacola, with a population estimated at 53,283 in 2007, and Century, with apopulation of 1,714 in 2000.
History
Escambia County was established in 1821 and was one of the two original Florida counties with St. John's County being the other. The boarder betweent he two was the Suwannee River. It's name comes from the Escambia River, which mean "barter" or "exchange" in Spanish. It is also well known as a site for high hurricane activity, with recent hits or close calls from storms such as Ivan, Dennis, Alrene, Danny, Opal, and Erin, just to name a few.
