The county was named for Isaac Shelby, who helped arrange for purchase of land from the Chickasaws in 1818. The county comprises the Memphis metro area. The estimated population in 2004 was 908,175. This was an increase of 1.19% from the 2000 census
Notes on Shelby County
- Shelby Farms, located in Shelby County, is the nation's largest urban parks. At approximately 4500 acres, it is more than 5 times larger than New York's famed Central Park.
- Naval Station Millington, located in Millington, TN, is the home base for the Bureau of Naval Personnel and Navy Personnel Command. It formerly was an air base, though in the late 90's the US Government gave the airfield to the City of Millington and removed air operations from the base.
