Adopted by Sean Dass
General Information
The US Virgin Islands consists of the main islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. The islands were named after Christopher Columbus during his second voyage after Saint Ursula and her virgin followers. The US gained possession of the islands on March 31, 1917 from Denmark after economic and tactical concerns that Germany may invade the Danish and use it as a possible submarine base.
Travel & Transportation
There are two main airports; one on the island of St. Thomas and the other on St. Croix. St. Thomas is considered to the gateway to the Virgin Islands. From there navigation between islands can be done via plane or ferries. Click on the airport icons in the above map to view more information regarding transportation.
Activities & Attractions
Fishing, yachting, golfing, and shopping are only a few of the activites that can be done on the island. It is no surprise that fishing charters are abundant since The International Game Fish Association reports 24 world-record catches from U.S. Virgin Islands waters.
