Castillo de San Marcos National Monument- St Augustine, Florida

 San Agustin Bastion

The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry structure in the continental US. Its construction began under spanish rule in 1672. It has an extensive history of battles and occupations, namely from Britain and Spain. In 1819 the fort was handed over the the United States when its name was changed to Fort Marion. In 1924 the fort was designated a National Monument and in 1933 it was transfered to the National Park Service. In 1942 the name was changed back to Castillo de San Marcos to honor the Spanish heritage and those who built it.

Five flags have flown over St. Augustine, and the fort, since 1565. From left: U.S., Confederate, Spanish (after 1785) British, and the Spanish (before 1785) Burgundy Cross.

The Castillo is a masonry star fort made of a stone called "coquina", literally "little shells", made of ancient shells that have bonded together to form a type of stone similar to limestone. Workers were brought in from Havana, Cuba, to construct the fort. The coquina was quarried from Anastasia Island across the bay from the Castillo, and ferried across to the construction site. Construction lasted twenty-three years, being completed in 1695.
